Frequently asked questions

Straight answers on getting started, costs, enrollment, using your plan, Medicare, and how we contact you. Still stuck? An advisor is a call away.

Getting started

What does Standard Health actually do?

We're a licensed insurance agency. We help you compare plans from multiple carriers, choose one that fits, enroll, and get help all year — at no cost to you.

Are you an insurance company?

No. We're an independent agency. The carriers underwrite and issue your policy; we help you find and manage it.

How do I get started?

Request a free plan review on our Contact page or by phone. We'll ask a few questions about your household, doctors, and budget, then walk you through your options.

What areas do you serve?

We're a regional agency headquartered in Sheridan, Wyoming, serving individuals, families, and Medicare members across much of the Midwest and South.

Costs & billing

Does working with an advisor cost extra?

No. Our guidance is free. We're compensated by the carriers, and that never adds to your premium — a plan costs the same whether you enroll through us or on your own.

What's the difference between a premium and a deductible?

Your premium is what you pay every month to have coverage. Your deductible is what you pay for care before the plan starts sharing costs. Lower premiums usually mean higher deductibles, and vice versa.

Could I qualify for financial help?

Possibly. Many people qualify for premium subsidies based on household income and size. We'll check your eligibility as part of your plan review.

What is an out-of-pocket maximum?

It's the most you'll pay for covered in-network care in a year. Once you hit it, the plan covers 100% of covered services for the rest of the year.

Enrollment & eligibility

When can I enroll?

During annual Open Enrollment, or any time you have a qualifying life event. Medicare has its own enrollment windows. We'll tell you exactly which dates apply to you.

What counts as a qualifying life event?

Things like moving, losing other coverage, getting married or divorced, having a baby, or a change in income. These open a Special Enrollment Period outside the normal window.

Can I add my spouse and children?

Yes. A family plan covers everyone under one deductible and one bill, and you can adjust who's covered as your household changes.

What information do I need to enroll?

Usually basic details for each person to be covered, household income for subsidy checks, and your preferred doctors or medications so we can match networks and drug lists.

Using your plan

Can I keep my current doctor?

Often, yes. Tell us who you see and we'll check which plans keep them in-network before you commit.

What's the difference between in-network and out-of-network?

In-network providers have agreed rates with your plan, so you pay less. Out-of-network care usually costs more, and on some plans isn't covered except for emergencies.

What if I have a problem with a claim?

Call us. One of the reasons people work with an agency is that we help sort out claims and coverage questions instead of leaving you on hold with a carrier.

Can I add dental or vision later?

Yes. Dental and vision can be layered onto most plans, and we can add them during enrollment or when your circumstances change.

Medicare

What is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare offered by private carriers. It bundles hospital and medical coverage, usually adds prescription drugs, and often includes dental, vision, and hearing.

When can I enroll in Medicare Advantage?

Around your 65th birthday (Initial Enrollment), during the Annual Election Period from Oct 15 to Dec 7, and during Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment from Jan 1 to Mar 31. Special periods may also apply.

Do you offer every Medicare plan available?

No. We don't offer every plan available in your area, and any information we provide is limited to the plans we do offer. For all your options, contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE.
